The Six Syllable Mantra of Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, is the most widely chanted mantra in Tibetan Buddhism. Each syllable of this mantra has a profound meaning, a sound, a color, and a higher purpose.
This famous mantra is “Om Mani Padme Hum” (pronounced “Om Mani Peme Hung” in Tibetan).
This weekend, Lama Sonam will give a detailed explanation of the mantra, according to the famous text “Mani Kha Bum,” in relation to
… the Wheel of Life,
… the six realms of existence,
… the six paramitas,
… the six root kleshas,
… the five Buddha wisdoms.
At the beginning of every meditation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, one takes refuge and commits to the practice of the six paramitas.
When reciting the six-syllable mantra, the syllable represents…
… Om stands for Buddha and the 1st Paramita of Generosity.
… Ma for Dharma and the 2nd Paramita of Ethical Discipline.
… Ni for Sangha and the 3rd Paramita of Patience.
… Pe for the Lama/Guru and the 4th Paramita of Joyful Effort.
… Me for one’s inner deity, the Yidam, and the 5th Paramita of Meditation.
… Hung for the principle of the Sky Wanderer-Dakini and the 6th Paramita of Wisdom.
We will gain a deeper understanding of this fascinating model this weekend.
